Welcome to the very first of our Lit Mag Reading Club discussions! I’m delighted to open up this conversation about Cleaver’s summer issue.
This issue is chock full of material for readers to dig into. There are six short stories, eight poems, nine flash pieces (a mix of fiction and nonfiction), three creative nonfiction pieces, one visual memoir, one series of visual art, as well as an advice column (!), book reviews, and craft essays. The issue’s cover was designed by Editor-in-Chief Karen Rile, and I think Karen may have also designed the art to accompany the pieces throughout the issue.
Contributors here bring a range of experiences, with several still in high school, a few writing from abroad and many working outside academia.
The work in this issue is fun and varied. I would be hard-pressed to describe this magazine as hewing to any one particular aesthetic. The short stories offer pieces
