Hi, me again! I hope your bellies are full, your spirits are sated, and you are not presently trapped under a giant stampede of people trying to get discount electronics at the mall.
Below is the line-up for December sessions.
First, an announcement:
For our December Lit Mag Reading Club, we will be reading the Winter 2024 issue of Five Points. The issue has not been printed yet; hard copies will be available soon. In the meantime, Editor Megan Sexton has kindly offered a free pdf for Club participants. You can claim the free pdf of the winter issue (and learn more about our Lit Mag Reading Club generally) here:
And now, here’s what’s ahead…
Wednesday, December 4th at 10:00 am est: Q & A with Darren C. Demaree, Editor-in-Chief of Best of the Net and Managing Editor of Ovenbird Poetry
Darren C. Demaree is Editor-in-chief of the Best of the Net anthology and Managing Editor of Ovenbird Poetry, whose page states, “We believe that poetry (read: writing that exists art-first) is the biggest hope and best proof that humans are not simply the most violent ornaments of a perplexing planet.”
Darren is also the author of twenty-three poetry collections. A recent press email stated, “This year alone, [Darren’s] work has appeared or is forthcoming in thirteen separate magazines, and he knows firsthand the stickiness of piecing out poems written in series, or collecting a wealth of publications into one cohesive story, the book.”
In this conversation we will try to cover it all—Darren’s work with Best of the Net and how pieces are selected for that series; Darren’s editorial work at Ovenbird Poetry; and his own work as a poet and his approach to submitting to magazines and compiling work for publishers.
This conversation is for paying subscribers only. It will be recorded, with the recording made available for paying subscribers afterward.
Registration link is at the bottom of this page.
Monday, December 9th at 1:00 pm est: Q & A with Seb Reilly, Editor of Seaside Gothic
Seaside Gothic is a magazine from the edge of the sea where the frontier of civilisation meets the wild of the water. We live beside the seaside and write amidst the changing of the tide on paper warped by the salt in the air and wet from the spray of the sea. From this divide we look for writing that expresses the sense of border living that is shared between the coast and the ocean, where language is pushed to the horizon and words take on new form as they find their home where the sea meets the sky.
This interview is open for all readers to attend and ask questions. It will be recorded. The video will be made available for all.
Tuesday, December 17th at 2:30 pm est: Lit Mag Chat with Becky
Okay, you all know the drill. The Lit Mag Chat is a fun, free-flowing, candid space for all of us to share good news, advice, resources, information and tales of woe. These sessions are not recorded so that all attendees feel free to ask questions and raise concerns. We’ll talk, we’ll laugh, we’ll tell stories, we’ll brainstorm holiday gift ideas for our impossible-to-please third cousins.
This session is for paying subscribers only.

Monday, December 23rd at 5:00 pm est: Lit Mag Reading Club discussion of Five Points, with Becky
As mentioned above, we are reading Five Points for our December Reading Club selection.
Since the publication of its inaugural issue in 1996, Five Points has become one of this country’s best literary magazines. Published three times a year by the Georgia State University Department of English, each issue features poetry, fiction, essays, and interviews with the most compelling writers working today. Philip Levine called Five Points “A refreshing combination of the old and the new. The best literary magazine I’ve read in ages!”
In this chat, we will talk about what we loved, what we learned, what intrigued us, what made us feel inspired, baffled, bored, delighted, and all the rest.
This session will not be recorded.
The Lit Mag Reading Club is one of the perks of being a paid subscriber. You can learn more about The Club here, and join anytime!
Thursday, December 26th at 6:00 pm est: Lit Mag Reading Club Q & A with Megan Marie Sexton, Editor of Five Points
In this interview we will hear from Megan all about the history, mission and editorial process of Five Points. We will get to ask all our questions about how the Winter 2024 issue was put together, as well as how the magazine decides on submissions generally.
