Wednesday, July 9th at 2:00 pm est: Submitting & Publishing Creative Nonfiction with Katherine E. Standefer
Katherine E. Standefer's debut book Lightning Flowers: My Journey to Uncover the Cost of Saving a Life was a Finalist for the Kirkus Prize in Nonfiction, a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice, and shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Prize from Columbia School of Journalism and the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard. Her essays have appeared in The Best American Essays 2016, been named “notable” in Best American Essays in 2017, 2019 and 2020, and won the 2015 Iowa Review Award in Nonfiction. Other work has appeared in Virginia Quarterly Review, The New England Review, Kenyon Review Online, and elsewhere.
In this session, Katherine will break down her process of submitting creative nonfiction and understanding the markets for these particular works. She will discuss the various types of creative nonfiction and how to determine which magazines are the right fit for what you do. The session will focus specifically on creative nonfiction but all writers are welcome to attend.
The session will be ninety minutes, including thirty minutes of Q & A.
This session will be recorded and the video will be shared with paying subscribers afterward.

Most of you know the deal by now. Our monthly Lit Mag Chats are fun and freewheeling spaces for you to ask questions, trade resources, learn more about the submissions process, share information about specific magazines, celebrate your good news, vent, opine, gather information, gain inspiration, laugh and laugh some more.
Writers in all genres at any stage of the submissions process are welcome to attend.
This session will not be recorded. What happens in Lit Mag Chats stays in Lit Mag Chats!

Our Lit Mag Reading Club pick for July is Clarkesworld!
Clarkesworld is a monthly science fiction and fantasy magazine first published in October 2006. Each issue contains interviews, thought-provoking articles, and between six and eight works of original fiction. Our fiction is also available in ebook editions/subscriptions, audio podcasts, print issues, and in our annual print/ebook anthologies. Clarkesworld has been recognized with a World Fantasy Award, three Hugo Awards, and a British Fantasy Award. Our fiction has been nominated for or won the Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, BSFA, Sturgeon, Locus, Shirley Jackson, Ditmar, Aurora, Aurealis, WSFA Small Press, and Stoker Awards.

Day & Time TBD: Q & A with Neil Clarke, Editor of Clarkesworld
In this conversation we will learn all about this journal. We’ll talk to Neil about when the magazine was created and why, how its mission has changed over the years, what makes great sci-fi writing, what kinds of trends he sees in this genre, what he’s looking for in submissions and more.
The interview will be recorded and the video will be sent to paying subscribers.
The interview will be in the last week of July. I am still arranging the exact day and time. I will post it here as soon as I have it.
