SAVE THE DATES! September interviews & info sessions & registration links!
All events for September & registration links
Happy almost autumn!
I’m delighted to present the line-up for September’s interviews and info sessions. There is a lot happening next month! We are kicking off our Lit Mag Reading Club with Terrain.org. Also, as I’ve mentioned, I’ll be branching out beyond editor interviews to include conversations with all sorts of people on a range of lit-mag-related subjects. We’re going to have such fun!
Be sure to bookmark this page, write the dates in Sharpie on your forehead, stitch pillows for your couch with this information and, above all, mark your calendars and come on out!
PLEASE NOTE: REGISTRATION LINKS FOR SUBSCRIBER-ONLY EVENTS ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS EMAIL.
I used to send registration links separately. In an effort to not bombard you with emails, I am now putting those links in the Save the Date announcement page. Subscribers will now find registration links here.
If you are ever having trouble finding the registration link to an event, you can always visit Lit Mag News and search the archive for keywords “registration links.” You can also email me anytime except during an interview. Please don’t wait until a session has begun to reach out for the registration link as I won’t be able to respond. Otherwise, I’m always happy to help.
Now, onto the events!
Tuesday, September 10th at 2:30 pm est: Q & A with Jason Lee Norman, Founding Editor of Funicular
Funicular Magazine was founded by Jeremy Bibaud and Jason Lee Norman. The idea simultaneously, independently, and cosmically, came to the minds of its editors over a pint in 2018. We saw a literary fiction-sized hole in Edmonton, Alberta. Sure, at the time our arch-nemesis Glass Buffalo had cornered the market on this genre by winning award after award for their perfect and beautiful magazine, but in the famous words of Shania Twain—that don’t impress me much. Besides, one of our editors is a MacEwan University alum (Go Griffins or whatever!) so we can only go so far in our praise of a magazine published by Edmonton’s other university. We published our first issue in 2019 and we’ve been doing it three times a year since.
This interview is free to the public and open for all to attend and ask questions. The interview will be recorded. A video will be sent to all readers of Lit Mag News.

Wednesday, September 18th at 2:00 pm est: Why Do Lit Mags Fold? (And How Can Writers Spot Journals With Staying Power?)
A Chat with Lauren Hohle, Erik Harper Klass & Benjamin Davis
The landscape of literary magazines has always been a landscape in flux. Lit mags close all the time, while new ones continue to open their doors. Is it possible to predict whether a lit mag has staying power? What are some clues writers can look for when submitting to make sure their published work will be around for a while? What are the most common reason lit mags fold? What should writers do when they publish in a lit mag that closes?
In this session, Becky will talk to Lauren Hohle, Former Managing Editor of Gettysburg Review and current Managing Editor of Conjunctions; Submitit Founder Erik Harper Klass; and Chill Subs Co-Founder Ben Davis, all of whom have extensive knowledge of the current lit mag world. (There will be data! And stats!) A fun and instructive session for writers and editors alike, we will cover the things lit mags can do to ensure longevity as well as advice for writers seeking the best homes for their work. All participants are invited to come with questions!
This session is for paying subscribers only. It will be recorded and the video will be sent to paying subscribers.

Tuesday, September 24th at 2:30 pm est: Lit Mag Reading Club Chat about Terrain.org
Terrain.org is the world’s first place-based online journal. We were founded on a vision of marrying literary work—poetry, creative nonfiction, and fiction—with articles and community case studies.
In this session we will get together to discuss our responses to the most recent work. All the work we are reading for our Lit Mag Reading Club is here.
Reminder: The Lit Mag Reading Club is meant to be a fun and chill way to incorporate more lit mag reading into our lives. Whether you read an entire issue or just skim a few poems, you are invited to attend our discussion sessions. These conversations are not recorded. We will chat openly about what we learned from the magazine, what inspired us, what had us scratching our heads, and what we loved.
You can learn more about The Lit Mag Reading Club here.
