I think that could absolutely work and could be an interesting way of distilling a particular theme or arc from a larger piece. So long as we can stay grounded in things like the passage of time and who people are. That might mean we need an additional line here or there to help us keep track of how everything connects.

A question: when considering an excerpt from a creative non-fiction book, could one write the excerpt as a series of smaller excerpts from different sections of the book? Yes, one would have to juxtapose the excerpts so that they made sense - they wouldn't be so disconnected as to confuse the reader. They would offer clearly drawn characters in critical, developing interactions, from different times during the arc of the narrative. And, each small excerpt would include essential "threads" of the book's story. Specific threads would be woven through the smaller excerpts. But each small excerpt could provide a different, valuable experience - for the characters and so, for the readers - which could catalyze the reader's fascination with the story, and their desire to find out what happens.
