Antioch Review returns; zines as resistance; partying with n+1; a "Writers, Beware" list; on the closure of lit mags; on Thuglit; lots of jobs & opportunities; Buellers!!; and more
Re Carolina Quarterly, I've just received this email from them via Submittable about a submission I sent a year ago.
'Dear Artists and Writers,
I’m sorry to report that despite our best efforts The Carolina Quarterly must go on hiatus for an undetermined length of time. We sincerely apologize for hanging on to your submissions for so long but it was done under the belief that we would be able to continue operations sooner. I understand that you might feel frustration about this decision — I would, as a working poet myself — and I appreciate your kindness and understanding.
We would like to refund submission fees for those who request it. Alternatively, you can choose to keep your submission active and we will read it for consideration when we are able to continue operations. Submittable makes reimbursement very challenging, so I’ve created a Google Form where you can make this request: https://forms.gle/cHfdeEPgT1U4CzmV9 Please fill out this form to request a refund by July 1, 2024, when I will manually process your refunds as fast as I can.
Thank you for believing in The Carolina Quarterly. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished over the years and hope to continue publishing the wonderful work we receive in the near future.
Sincerely,
Colin Dekeersgieter , Poetry Editor, The Carolina Quarterly'
Perhaps Colin is planning to pay refunds from the $2500 he won recently. ;-)
Thanks for mentioning Fairy Tale Review, Becky. It’s just over a year since I subbed to them and there’s been no word since February, when they promised all submitters a response by end April. I would definitely understand and sympathize if the reason for the delay were that the chief editor has suffered a personal hardship (and wouldn’t expect to know details) but I don’t understand why other members of the editorial team can’t step up and let the remaining submitters know whether or not they should still expect a response. It’s easy to do on Submittable.
You are such an important voice. You are important. Your work is important. May you have a wonderful, inspiring and rejuvenating time with the lavender and horses!!
I love the conscientious concern for writers here. Regarding the existential pressures on lit journals, though, I’m uncertain. Why do writers often prefer the journals to online publication like Substack? Because it’s the traditional affirmation and (sometimes) route to success. Ok, but Substack is the new technology. It reminds me of the Shakespearean theatre. Low prestige, but a place of extraordinary opportunity in its day. And the good writers - well, we still read them.
Hi Becky, that’s an interesting proposal. If I were to write this longer piece, how long would you want it? And would you want it with or without footnotes? (I wouldn’t be able to start for a few weeks btw, as I’m writing another article at present...)
I had a piece of flash CNF accepted at Prose Online, and signed a DocuSign contract. They normally have a quick turn-around time. They asked me to send my contact information so they could do an interview prior to publishing. I sent the information. A year has gone by with no response to emails, texts, or even website and submittable messages. I finally wrote them an email withdrawing my piece.
I've had some of my clients' work recently published in Writing Disorder (and one of my own stories). No issues with correspondence (on our end, at least).
Here's my contribution to the Bueller line-up. My submissions to these magazines are still listed as "In Progress" on Submittable. These are the names of the journals and the dates on which I submitted to them:
1. A story to Suburbia Journal, 1/19/2023
2. Poems to Button Eye Review, 10/25/2022
3. Poems to Whales of Arcadia, 11/28/2020 (appears to be defunct as of July 2022)
This might be old news... Anyone heard from The Southampton Review? Socials haven't been updated since 2021... Duotrope pulled their listing for falling behind on publications... Clifford Garstang gives them a (?) in his rankings. But then I've got a submission from September that moved over to "In Progress" back in October of '23. Thoughts?

I also just received this message from Carolina Quarterly, regarding a submission I sent last September.
I reached out to the Cimarron Review last week and they replied a couple of days later. Very apologetic for being behind.

I've had the same experience with Fairy Tale Review. Thanks for mentioning!
Thanks for sharing my newsletter! Means a lot :)

This would be a great subject to explore in a longer article. I'd love to read such an article and possibly run it here!

Posting Bueller news is a great service. Thank you.

Looking forward to "pictures of lavender fields and horses", Becky! ;) Have fun in your travels.
Love the quote from Devin Kate Pope's page, thank you for sharing that, Becky! Just followed her Substack. :)
Thanks so much for the shout-out!
As a Londoner, I’m happy that you had an unexpected day in my home town! I’m off the ‘smoke’ next Monday to see my ‘bruv’
and sink some pints. 🙃
I do hope that your flight home goes well Becky.
Is there a running list of Buellers?
