Lit Mag Reading Club; open letter from Apogee; new Whiting Award rules; interviews with editors of Taco Bell Quarterly, Zyzzyva, Bennington Review; volunteer opportunities, jobs, 100+ markets, & more
Oh Zyzzyva. Did you just throw out the manuscripts that were trapped in your office during Covid lockdown? Who knows? Well, it was a tough time — and it’s not over! Keep publishing the occasional unknown. :-)
I mailed an envelope in Jan 2020. I followed up twice via Z’s online contact form. The one response I got claimed they hadn’t been able to get back to the office, presumably where the submission was stranded. I no longer have any expectation that I will hear back. Probably tossed or lost. So it goes.
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Glenn. Maybe you could re-send the submission with a comment in the cover letter that you're concerned it might have gotten lost? Either way, that's annoying!
Yes, it’s annoying, but sh*t happens. I have sent work to Z for decades and never has a spark of interest been expressed. Founding editor Howard Junker used to reply within two weeks, sometimes within a week. The editors who took over were averaging four months or more. Then came Covid and …
Anyway, the pieces I sent back in 2020 are soon to be included in a published book, so there’s not really a point in sending them back to Z.
I don’t wish them ill. May they put forth a magazine they feel is worth the trouble.
As always, your posts are invaluable. Thank you, Becky.

Wait, whaaaaat? Is this another mag that's been sitting on subs since 2020?

They had their chance!
