Hello and Happy Monday, pals.

This missive is just a reminder of an event this Wednesday, July 9th at 2:00 pm est.

I don’t typically send out reminders such as this. (A long time ago a reader told me his inbox was too full; reminder emails are too annoying.) However, I initially posted the incorrect date on our Save the Dates page and wanted to make sure everyone has the correct information.

Also, we have a whole lot of new subscribers here. (Welcome!) You might have missed the rollout of the monthly schedule.

Also, over the weekend I received a very oddly specific fortune cookie. It must surely have been referring to this event, which Kati and I have been trying to schedule for months:

So there you have it. The session is Submitting & Publishing Creative Nonfiction with Katherine E. Standefer.

Katherine E. Standefer (Author of Lightning Flowers)
Katherine E. Standefer

In this session, Katherine will break down her process of submitting creative nonfiction and understanding the markets for these particular works. She will discuss the various types of creative nonfiction and how to determine which magazines are the right fit for what you do. The session will focus specifically on creative nonfiction but all writers are welcome to attend.

Katherine E. Standefer built her writing career by publishing in literary magazines. In 2015, her essay "In Praise of Contempt" won the Iowa Review Award in Nonfiction and went on to be selected by Jonathan Franzen for The Best American Essays 2016, directly leading to her book deal. Her essays were BAE Notables in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Her essay, "Shock to the Heart, Or: A Primer on the Practical Applications of Electricity" was the inspiration for the gorgeous anthology Beautiful Flesh: A Body of Essays, edited by Stephanie G'Schwind of The Colorado Review (where the essay first appeared).

Kati's debut memoir Lightning Flowers was a Finalist for the Kirkus Prize in Nonfiction, a New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice, and shortlisted for the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Prize from Columbia School for Journalism. Kati earned her MFA at University of Arizona and has taught writing to both undergraduates and graduate students as well as at conferences, libraries, and literary centers around the country. Her writing has appeared in The New England Review, Kenyon Review Online, The Normal School, swamp pink, Fugue, Camas, Quarterly West, Cutbank, The Indiana Review, Terrain, Fourth Genre, The New York Times, the LA Times, The High Country News, and elsewhere. She lives in a cabin in Wyoming.

The session will be ninety minutes, including thirty minutes of Q & A.

This session will be recorded and the video will be shared with paying subscribers afterward.

Registration link is at the bottom of this page.

Thanks and see you soon!
