Oh this was a good one Becky! I wondered if I was the only person floored by what happened with Bookforum... but hey! I got a long story coming out in the January Dark Yonder! Let's hear it for neo-neo noir!!

Wow, that WWB grant from the Whiting Foundation is going to super-charge them! I am so glad for everyone there and for Sam Schnee, one of WWB's founding editors.

Another highly enjoyable column and just a thought from the other side of the pond if I may. Not wanting to bring things down to their lowest possible denominator, do you have any idea about the success ratio involved in the Lit-Mag scene, over here there is a sense your work can get stuck in a huge slush pile and remains there for years before you’re told the organisation has been forced to close. I appreciate this isn’t a simple exercise in probability, some writing will probably never see the light of day and for good reason. However, there is an imbalance between supply and demand in virtually every sphere of the creative sectors, which is why Substack is such a useful showcase for any writer. In addition the idea of being awarded a bursary – which happened to me in 2021 and is something I’ve written about for creatives based in the UK – is far more common than I suspect would be the case in the US. But would be interested in your thoughts.

Regards…M
