PANK "loves" you; unconventional Hobart book review; history of leading Australian mags Meanjin & Overland; new Meanjin Editor; contests to fund magazines; BASS story reviews; new markets & more
Becky, did the link you posted as 'more worthwhile investments' lead to cat butt magnets, or was that Amazon's personalized algorithm for me? Either way, I ordered. Always in need of cat butts.
It's like as an editor who was formerly full of shame and lacked confidence and wasn't capable of taking her former lit mag seriously (which is a huge shame!), I know how things can get behind and out hand REAL quick. But taking people's money and not delivering. Oof.
I hadn't paid much attention to the lit mag world until until a few months back when I started to dip my toes in again and come back to myself. I started following your substack. I saw your initial note on pank and was like oh shit so that's where they're at. I mean I was around when it was just starting up and it was the hottest thing, right?
And then within days it seems their email came round and I didn't even know I was still on their email list! I hadn't heard from them in YEARS. So, I'm on board with your assessment, that what they should have thrown out is next actions rather than requests. Seems they have a whole pile of submissions to sift through, they don't really need new ones.
Just now thinking how useful it might be for we small press publishers to read up on business practices. Marketing, workflows, ETHICS. Shrug.
Oh, ye of alliterative alignment and awesome assessment of the actions of those (p)ank avoiders of actual reality, thanks so much for the follow up! You are de boss!
Got that same email from PANK and had a similar reaction (love those Cat Butt Magnets). Wondering if the editor has "hear[d] all that [we] say" about American Poetry Journal, too.

It did, yes! I am glad you ordered. We all need more cat butt magnets in our lives.

Haha, thanks Diana!
Oh, Becky, is that all?!? (Asking for more paid subs and comp emtries.) I thought you were going to say they'd issued a crowd-funding appeal.
What a crowd!
I rec'd a response to a 2020 Harvard Review submission 2 yrs, 7 mos. later, after all titles had been accepted elsewhere.

Ha, excellent question.
